Rene Meulensteen
Born in 1964 in The Netherlands Rene Meulensteen grew up and played his youth soccer when the foundation of “Dutch Total Soccer” was built. Rene was technically and tactically a very gifted player but understood early in his career that, physically, he did not have the speed to keep up with the modern game at the highest level. What followed has then been a tremendously successful coaching career that started in NEC Nijmegen while he was still playing. Rene holds both the UEFA “A” and the Royal Netherlands Football Association Royal Dutch FA “TCI” coaching licenses.
2008 – Present
Promoted to First Team Coach and now conducts all daily training for Manchester United’s best.
2007-2008
Hired at Manchester United again, this time as Technical Skill Development Coach, primarily for the First team.
2006-2007
Went to be Head Coach and Manager of Brondby IF, Denmark. It was a short stay as Rene and members of the board did not see the same way forward for the club.
2005-2006
Promoted to Senior Reserve Team Coach while still retaining the role as “Skill Development Coach.”
2001-2005
Hired at Manchester United as the club’s Skill Development Coach in charge of all the youth players from age 9 to 21. Here he developed the curriculum and philosophy still being used by the United Youth Academy teams.
2000-2001
Went to league rival Al-Sadd Sports Club where he managed the club to the domestic Emir Cup.
1999-2000
Coached Qatari club Al-Etehad (now known as Al-Gharrafa) and won the Arab Cup which is equivalent to Champions League in Europe which Manchester United won the same year in 1999.
1993 – 1999
At 29 years of age Rene went to Qatar to coach side by side with legendary Wiel Coerver for Qatar’s Youth Development Program. Ended up coaching both the Qatar National U16 and U17 teams.
